  • The Indian power transmission segment has grown significantly over the years, making the country’s electricity grid one of the largest synchronous grids in the world. The segment is set to grow even further, driven by the need to evacuate large-scale renewables. With India targeting to meet 50 per cent of its energy needs from renewables and achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 as announced at COP26, significant expansion and strengthening of the interstate transmission system (ISTS) and intra-state transmission system will be required. In addition, transmission utilities will need to leapfrog to the next level of technology for conductors, towers and substations to enable optimal utilisation of RoW and transfer bulk power across regions.
  • Advanced conductor technologies such as HTLS conductors, high surge impedance loading lines, HVDC cables and underground cables are expected to gain traction in the future. Likewise, the installation of modern tower structures such as monopoles, multi-circuit towers, narrow-based and ERS towers is picking pace among utilities.
  • Substation technologies have also evolved considerably over the years to meet the emerging requirements of utilities as well as adapt to the changing grid. Today, the growth of modern substations is being driven by the need for remote monitoring and control, space optimisation, lower cost, longer asset life, enhanced safety, and reduced failure rates.
  • Transformer technologies have progressed and made way for advanced solutions such as HVDC converter transformers, phase-shifting, coupling and mobile transformers. An emerging trend is the installation of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations in place of conventional AIS substations as Indian utilities grapple with RoW and land acquisition issues. Equipment manufacturers have also developed new environment-friendly insulation mixtures to allay the environmental concerns related to the use of SF6 in GIS.
  • In addition, digital substations are gaining traction across utilities as digitalisation helps to improve the availability and reliability of power supply through the use of sophisticated sensors and IEDs. Therefore, substation automation and remote monitoring solutions are increasingly being adopted by utilities.
  • Moreover, innovative techniques are being deployed for faster construction and better maintenance of transmission lines, towers and substations. For instance, LiDAR is used to conduct topographic mapping, helicopters are being used for stringing, especially in inaccessible locations, and drones are being deployed to monitor the health of lines and towers. Operations and maintenance practices are also shifting from reactive maintenance to condition-based and predictive maintenance.
  • Reconductoring is also emerging as a focus area to upgrade ageing transmission networks and enhance grid capacity. Further, advanced solutions such as FACTS and capacitor banks are being deployed by utilities to mitigate the impact of renewables on grid stability.
  • The mission of this conference is to highlight the technologies and innovations in the transmission infrastructure space, spanning lines and towers as well as high voltage transformers, switchgear and substations. It will discuss the experience of utilities and developers in transitioning to these newer technologies. It will also provide a platform for showcasing the successful projects and best practices in the segment.
