  • Container traffic at Indian ports has grown at a CAGR of 7.3 per cent between 2016-17 and 2020-21. The total container traffic stood at around 17.34 million TEUs during 2020-21. The share of major ports in the total container traffic reduced from 65 per cent in 2016-17 to 55 per cent in 2020-21, with the coming up of new non-major container handling ports.
  • Huge potential exists for transporting containers through the more cost-effective modes of transport such as coastal shipping and inland water transport route. Cargo volumes transported through waterways increased at a CAGR of 15 per cent between 2015-16 and 2020-21.
  • The government is committed towards developing 35 multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs) in the country at a total cost of Rs 500 billion. National Highways and Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has been set up for this purpose. Construction of the country’s first such park in Assam’s Jogighopa is underway while work on the other two MMLPs in Nagpur and Chennai is likely to start soon.
  • The government is also looking at the creation of a national single window logistics portal with participation from private players. Other than this, about 24 digital systems of six ministries are being integrated through the Unified Logistics Interface Platform to reduce logistics costs.
  • The logistics sector is well placed and poised for growth on account of government impetus to infrastructure development – better road connectivity, dedicated freight corridors, tech-driven warehousing, MMLPs, etc. Besides, the PM Gati Shakti plan has been introduced with the aim to ensure integrated planning and execution of multimodal connectivity projects.
  • The ongoing shipping container shortage due to the Covid-19 pandemic and elevated freight rates remain a cause for concern for exporters and importers. However, high traffic growth of containerised commodities, improved 3PL services, the development of container terminals, and the use of technologically advanced equipment in handling container traffic are potential drivers of containerisation in the country. Technologies such as cloud computing, IoT and blockchain have huge scope to change the way port operators and logistics players function.
  • The mission of this conference is to highlights the recent developments and emerging trends in the container infrastructure segment, analyse the impact of recent government initiatives, discuss the potential role of automation in the industry and identify the key challenges and potential solutions. The conference will also showcase new projects, relevant technologies and new equipment offerings.
