  • The power sector is undergoingdigital transformation in a big way. IT-OT integration is playing a key role in the digitalisation ofpower utilities. In the rapidly evolving energy landscape, IT-OT convergence is enabling utilities to change how they develop and operate their networks as well as deliver economic and efficient services to consumers.
  • On the distribution side, there has been a strong policy push towards IT-OT integration, particularly the implementation of smart prepaid metering, under various government programmes. Specifically, the newly launched Rs 3 trillion Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) is aimed at increasing technology penetration in the day-to-day operations of utilities in the coming two to three years. It laysanemphasis on 100 per cent prepaid smart metering at all levels.
  • Discoms see a strong business case in developing a structured approach to IT-OT integration. Customer information systems, outage management systems, demand response management systems and EV roll-outs, IT-OT technology convergence thatis aligned with technologies like AI/ML, analytics, cloud, etc. areexpected to play a key role in the distribution segmentin the next few years.
  • For generation companies, a key driver for IT-OT integration has been improvement inasset health and efficiency while reducing downtime and costs. Utilities are adopting advanced solutions like AI, ML and IoT to improve equipment operations andworker safety, achieve flexibilisation, optimise field operations, find and address problems in real time and optimise field operations.
  • Meanwhile, with the surge in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, which are intermittent in nature, utilities are increasingly relying on digital technologies such as remote monitoring, advanced analytics, energy storage solutions and distributed grid systems to stabilise their supply and monitor the status of assets.
  • For transmission utilities, IT-OT convergence is enabling them to capture data on system availability, tripping, outages in a granular way, and address reliability and operational concerns in real-time grid monitoring. At the same time, integration is helping them to move beyond time-based preventive maintenance for their critical assets to proactive and financiallyoptimised maintenance strategies.
  • However, as IT-OT systems move towards more open data and digitalisation, a key challenge for utilities is to enhance cybersecurity controls. Utilities would be required to understand the types of threats that pose a risk and select security devices, tools and platforms that canmonitor, detect and respond to these threats.
  • Another issuethat needs to be addressed is the lack of interoperability and harmonisation of standards for network, data communication and system integration. Further, a talent strategy must be adopted todevelopthecritical digital capabilities of utilities.
  • The mission of the conference is to highlight the key trends in IT-OT integration for power generation, distribution and transmission utilities; deliberate upon the new and emerging requirements of power utilities; and discuss the utility strategies, experiences and challenges in their digitalisation transformation journey. The conference will also showcase best practices, and the most promising technologies and solutions.
