- The irrigation sector has been witnessing traction over the past few years, owing to greater focus on multipurpose irrigation projects as well as infrastructure creation supported by government programmes. In December 2021, the government decided to extend the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana by four years till 2025-26 to complete the ongoing projects. Meanwhile, other schemes such as Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme, Har Khet Ko Pani and Watershed Development Component have also been extended.
- The growing emphasis on effective use of finite water resources, especially with fast depleting groundwater, has resulted in micro-irrigation gaining prominence over the conventional flooding methods. Techniques like drip and sprinkler irrigation are witnessing higher adoption. States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are adopting several micro-irrigation techniques for cultivating land and for judicious use of water in farming.
- Use of solar pumps is emerging as a feasible, non-polluting source of energy for agricultural use. Under the government’s Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), 0.36 million solar pumps have been approved till June 30, 2022. Of these, 0.12 million have been installed so far.
- The sector is also witnessing widespread adoption of technological solutions to increase irrigation efficiency with minimal impact on environment. Use of remote sensing for ground water table estimation and cropped area assessment, soil sensors, SCADA-based systems, GIS mapping, mobile applications are some examples.
- With several projects in the planned and announced stages, the irrigation infrastructure is expected to expand significantly in coming years. It is estimated that over Rs 5 trillion worth of projects will be awarded over the next five to six years.
- The mission of this conference is to discuss key trends and developments, and highlight the opportunities and challenges in the irrigation industry in India. The conference will provide a platform to showcase recent innovations in irrigation systems, technology and equipment, noteworthy projects and best practices.
