  • The irrigation sector has witnessed a surge in the adoption of new and innovative construction techniques and methods due to the alarming depletion of water resources. New irrigation technologies are being developed to shift from rain-dependent farming to innovative practices such as the underground pipeline conveyance, rainwater harvesting and storage, and the use of treated wastewater.
  • A greater emphasis is being laid on micro-irrigation (drip and sprinkler) systems and efficient water-use mechanisms. Modern designs for canal irrigation and storage systems are being adopted to reduce the execution time and improve the quality of structures. Systems such as solar-powered lift micro-irrigation are gaining prominence over the conventional flooding method of irrigation.
  • Sophistication in equipment is being witnessed across the irrigation sector. Higher capacity equipment with better safety features is being developed. Besides, a major technological innovation has been the canal network flow monitoring system, which monitors canal systems and on-farm parameters using sensors, remote terminal units and information and communications technology. The use of digital solutions such as geographic information systems is also being tested to enable complete online tracking of the micro-irrigation system.
  • With several projects in the planned and announced stages, the irrigation infrastructure is expected to expand significantly. New strategies need to be devised to fast-track the construction work and minimise the impact of Covid-19 on the sector. It is estimated that over Rs 5 trillion worth of projects will be awarded over the next five to six years. This will create manifold opportunities for EPC contractors, technology suppliers, and raw material and equipment providers. With the greater use of modern techniques and technologies for risk assessment, design and construction, the sector will witness lower risks in project construction in the years to come.
  • The mission of this virtual conference is to understand the emerging trends and developments, discuss the state irrigation plans, and highlight the opportunities and challenges. It will also showcase the latest construction techniques, best practices and the new and innovative technologies in design, engineering and construction.
