- Digitalisation has become an important part of city gas distribution (CGD) business processes, ranging from network planning, engineering, and operations and maintenance, to complete management of network assets. Advanced solutions, including SCADA, GIS and the use of dashboards, analytical tools and innovative software, are enabling CGD companies to monitor their assets in real time, with greater precision. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which called for remote working, has further strengthened the case for the uptake of such technologies and increased the digitalisation of the “office”.
- An increasing number of CGD operators at the outset of their digital journeys are already seeing promising results. Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL), Indraprastha Gas Limited, Adani Gas, Mahanagar Gas Limited and GAIL Gas have been at the forefront in implementing innovative digital technologies that enhance the customer experience while making its operations more efficient. New entrants such as AG&P, Think Gas, Torrent Gas and Megha Engineering are deploying newer and advanced digital solutions, further creating opportunities for technology providers.
- New technologies such as the internet of things, big data and cloud computing are changing the way CGD companies do business. Another key area of interest for CGD utilities is deploying solutions that enable real-time, remote control or predictive maintenance to extend the life or operating efficiency of assets. Large volumes of data are also being generated that need to be stored, processed and analysed. In this context, nex-gen digital tools such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning for compete automation are also gaining traction.
- Going forward, digitalisation is expected to improve operations and increase flexibility throughout the CGD value chain. That said, with increasing digitalisation, data security is becoming a key concern. CGD operators, therefore, need to ensure that their risk management and response practices are aligned to a digitally controlled environment. At any rate, adequate workforce training and change management are essential for the smooth adoption of digital solutions.
- The mission of this virtual conference is to highlight the progress of CGD companies with regard to digital transformation, discuss the experience and challenges in technology adoption, and identify the new and emerging requirements. The conference will also showcase the best practices, and the most promising digital technologies and solutions.
