- The market for drones in India is expanding at a rapid pace. The domestic drone manufacturing industry is expected to grow from Rs 600 million in 2020-21 to over Rs 9 billion in 2023-24 in terms of annual turnover. The drone services industry is expected to grow to over Rs 300 billionin the next three years.
- The government envisions the country to become a global drone hub by 2030. It has been providing the necessary impetus to the drone industry through regulatory interventions such as the Drone Rules, 2021,the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme for Drones, 2021, and a ban on the import of drones. The Union Budget 2022-23 also announced the Drone Shakti initiative to promote the use of drone applications.
- Drones have a far-reaching impact on infrastructure with applications across sectors such as roads, aviation, oil and gas exploration, mining andtelecom,for project surveillance and supervision and asset inspection. The aviation industry has been the frontrunner in promoting the use of drones through initiatives such as DigitalSky and the drone certification scheme. NHAI has also made the use of drones mandatory for project monitoring. Besides, Indian Railways and Oil India Limited havealready introduced drone-based surveillance systems. The mining sector too has been quick to adopt drone technology for production measurement, mine surveys and checking of illegal mining. In fact, the mining rules have been amended to make drone surveys mandatory.
