- Development of high-speed rail (HSR) systems is set to transform India’s rail network. Higher speeds, advanced technologies, faster travel time are some of the notable features that will help in delivering world-class travel experience to passengers. Globally, HSR has proven to be a cost-efficient mode of travel in countries like Japan, China, France and Germany. At present, implementation of 508.09 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, the country’s first HSR project, is underway. The project is being developed with technical and financial assistance from Japan, and is seeing deployment of advanced technologies such as aerial LIDAR for topographic survey, DS-ATC Shinkansen technology for signaling system, etc. The pace of execution, however, has been impacted by various challenges, key amongst them being land acquisition and right of way. The successful completion of Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will be crucial as it will pave way for the development of seven more corridors which currently are at different stages of survey and DPR preparation. With the technology for semi-HSR already in place, the country is set to adopt a more sustainable and cheaper mode of transport. Apart from social and economic benefits, HSR and semi HSR have the potential to create a commercial impact as well.
- The mission of this workshop is to discuss the emerging technologies and best practices in the high speed rail segment, identify the issues being faced in construction and explore the potential financing solutions.
