COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL SOLAR MARKET IN INDIA

  • The commercial and industrial (C&I) users consume approximately 49 per cent of the electricity generated in India, and account for 70- 80 per cent of the country’s rooftop solar In the utility-scale solar segment as well, C&I power consumers are increasingly making headway through open access and group captive routes. According to a recent report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, India’s new onsite rooftop solar installations across the C&I segment are expected to be in the range of 0.8-1.2 GW in 2020, a significant capacity despite the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
  • The increasing electricity demand and rising grid tariffs for C&I customers are the key factors driving commercial users to move to solar power, which is not only cleaner and cheaper but also gives them tariff certainty for up to 25 Realising the cost benefits of solar over conventional power, a large number of medium, small, and micro enterprises (MSMEs) are entering the market.
  • Meanwhile, the payback period for solar projects is gradually shortening with the declining cost of In the rooftop solar space, payback can be realised within three to four years under the capex model. For an opex project, the tariff rate is Rs 3.5-Rs 4 per kWh, which is less than half the average of C&I grid tariffs prevalent across most states.
  • The next revolution in the solar power segment will be in the storage In the rooftop space, C&I consumers would be the first to adopt the solar plus storage model. Some pilots have already been tested and many large industrial and commercial users are undertaking storage trials.
  • Technical advances such as higher generation efficiency from bifacial mono-PERC modules, which need less rooftop space, will define the future growth of this
  • Clearly, there are a plenty of opportunities in the C&I solar segment, but several issues must be tackled to speed up its These include difficulty in project financing especially for MSME players, policy unambiguity regarding net metering implementation, regulatory uncertainty on open access and CSS charges, and ineffective grid integration of these plants. The impact of the growing C&I solar capacity on utility financials and infrastructure needs to be handled more carefully.
  • The mission of this conference is to provide a platform to study the growth trajectory and demand outlook of the solar C&I segment; discuss the supportive policy and regulatory regime; identify the key emerging trends in the C&I solar segment in India with a focus on the impact of coronavirus; and discuss the key challenges and possible

SOLAR OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

  • With the growing deployment of solar capacity and increasing portfolio sizes, developers are focusing on the detailed operations and maintenance (O&M) of solar power O&M plays a key role in ensuring high performance. It also accounts for the majority of the solar plant running cost.
  • Until a few years back, solar O&M was limited to module cleaning, plant security and vegetation removal, but it has now evolved into a stand-alone business Various third-party O&M service providers are now offering a range of services to solar plant developers at competitive prices.
  • A key emerging trend witnessed in third-party solar O&M is the increasing use of automation and digitalisation to reduce project downtime and improve plant performance. Remote monitoring systems are being set up at centralised locations to monitor the solar plant from a remote location in real
  • To integrate renewable energy with the grid, various state governments have come up with strict scheduling, forecasting and deviation settlement regulations, which penalise over- and under-generation of electricity from renewable energy plants. This has encouraged O&M players to invest in the automation of predictive maintenance Efficient and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled monitoring platforms are already in use for predictive O&M.
  • Automation is helping O&M players reduce manpower costs and maintain profitability despite their squeezed Drones are being used for site assessment and O&M, providing greater detail than ground crews. Moreover, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras can detect malfunctioning modules, specifically hotspots, which reduce electricity generation.
  • Meanwhile, robotic module cleaning solutions are also being used widely, to decrease labour costs. These solutions are being developed for both cleaning with water and without
  • Going forward, corrective and preventive maintenance to predictive and prescriptive maintenance analytics based on automation and digitalisation will be required to help reduce downtime and improve the operation costs of solar The adoption of advanced technology for the optimisation of O&M services will help prepare service providers for the significant growth in installations expected over the next four to five years.
