- The Indian aviation sector has finally recovered from the impact of Covid-19. Traffic has picked up significantly, more than doubling from 63 million passengers in the April-September 2021 period to 150 million passengers in the corresponding period in 2022.
- At present, around 141 airports are operational across the country and the number is expected to increase to 220 by 2024-25. Further, the sector operates a fleet of around 700 aircraft, which is expected to increase to around 1,000 in the coming years.
- There have been several notable developments in the sector, such as construction of big-ticket greenfield airports, privatisation of airports, launch of a new airline, as well as formulation of a drone policy, which have contributed to the positive sentiment. The RCS UDAN scheme, which is now in its fifth year, has helped air traffic grow, with new routes being awarded, and more and more airports being operationalised.
- The leasing of six airports – Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru and Guwahati – has been a significant step. These have been awarded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for operations, management and development under public-private partnership mode for a period of 50 years. As per the National Monetisation Pipeline, a total of 25 airports of the AAI have been earmarked for asset monetisation by 2025.
- Meanwhile, with the aim of making India a global maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub, the government has introduced a new MRO policy. Eight airports have been identified for setting up MRO facilities, namely Begumpet (Telangana), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Chandigarh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Kolkata (West Bengal) and Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh).
- Technology has now become an integral part of the aviation sector. Airports and airlines are extensively using technology and digitalisation to make traveling more efficient and smoother for passengers. Almost all airport related activities are now being done with the help of technology including plane boarding procedures, contactless screening, biometrics, etc.
- The sector outlook for the future looks positive, with investments to the tune of around Rs 1 trillion expected in airport infrastructure development. This includes expansion of terminal buildings, setting up new domestic cargo terminals, provision of navigational facilities and development of greenfield airports.
- The mission of this conference is to discuss emerging trends in the sector, highlight upcoming opportunities, identify unresolved challenges, and discuss future priorities. The conference will also showcase the most noteworthy projects and promising technology solutions.
